CARRARA
The visit of Carrara departs from
the Duomo, built between the 11th and 14th century. The building
is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with a white
and grey marble façade, decorated with red marble. |

Many
art works, such as some plaster works by Canova, are housed
in the Palazzo Cybo Malaspina, donated to the Accademia delle
Belle Arti in 1805. But the main attraction of Carrara is the
marble quarries and the work of the precious white stone. The
Apuane marble, extracted since Roman times, has provided the
Tuscan artists with the raw material for their inestimable masterpieces,
but the marble has also been used for other purposes, even for
daily household items. Apart from the Museo Civico del Marmo,
you should visit the main marble sites: Fantiscritti, Torrano
and the picturesque village of Colonnata, where you are able
to taste some good food. The gastronomic specialities of this
part of Tuscany is the dainty "lard of Colonnata",
spicy and made in different ways, probably each family has its
own recipe, and then stored in white marble slabs. In the surroundings,
Fosdinovo is worth a visit, a beautiful Medieval village with
the Malaspina Castle. Fosdinovo preserves the Chiesa di San
Remigio with Romanesque origins, which was restructured during
the Baroque period. |
