The
museum was completely restructured in 1975 and features today
a Prehistoric section, one section for the Etruscan site of
Roselle and a collection which houses artefacts found in the
antique centres of Maremma. The same palace in piazza Baccarini,
also houses a museum of religious art, a collection of religious
paintings and artefacts. The collection is concentrated on works
by artists from Siena between the 13th and the 16th century.
Works of particular interest are "The Last Judgement"
by Guido da Siena and the "Madonna delle ciliegie"
by Sassetta. Along the way to the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale,
where an enormous selenite crystal almost 2 m high and a plaster
moulding are exposed, you pass the Bigi Church with the Clares'
convent and the San Francesco Church. The Convent was built
at the end of the 16th century on the will of the Grand Duke
who had ordered to destroy the old convent in order to build
new fortifications. The Church called "dei Bigi" was
built beside the Convent and got its name from the grey colour
of the monks' cowls. The Church of San Francesco got its Gothic
look when it was taking over by the Franciscans from the Benedectine
monks in the 13th century. The brick façade is simple
and inside it houses a splendid Crucifix attributed to Duccio
di Buoninsegna. You are able to admire a nice travertine well
from the Renaissance in the charming convent of the church.
