DISCOVERING
THE Cities
The
most suggestive part of Livorno is the Medicean part. The Medici
family wanted Livorno to be "the ideal Cities" with
its heritage of fortresses and bastions, fortified towers and
walls. This network of streets and channels is today the old
quarter called Venezia (Venice). The parks, the Liberty villas
and the palaces testify the lively period during the 18th and
19th century when the first bathing establishments opened, which
meant the beginning of the bathing tourism in Italy.

The
Promenade.
The first thing you have to do when you come to Livorno
is to walk from the harbour to Antignano along the seaside.
The promenade called Viale Italia from the 19th century, lined
with elegant palaces and bathing establishments, features the
"Accademia Navale" (the Marine Academy). The importance
of the tourism sector can be seen at Ardenza Mare where the
so called Grand Duch "Casini" stand, which are thirteen
palaces located in a semi-circle. The promenade then reaches
"Romito", a beautiful rose-coloured rock, and ends
at Quercianella, a quiet summer resort surrounded by pine-trees.
The
Medicean Town.
The itinerary to discover the Medicean fortifications departs
from the Fortezza Vecchia that dominates the Porto Mediceo (the
Medicean Port). The most interesting site is the Mastio di Matilde,
built on Roman remains and then absorbed in the so-called Quadratura
dei Pisani, a fortification which was raised in the second half
of the 14th century together with the fortress. Walking along
the external walls you reach the Fortezza Nuova, built between
1590 and 1594 by Buontalenti in order to amplify the bastions
of the Cities. The characteristic Medicean Fosses, which still
surround the Cities, were dug during the first years of the
17th century.
Effetto
Venezia.
Inside the pentagonal fortifications you find the real
marine spirit of Livorno; a network of streets and channels,
bridges and quarters from the 17th century, which was once the
Businesses and the commercial centre of the Cities and today
the place where the "Effetto Venezia", one of the
most suggestive festivals in Livorno, is celebrated every summer.
The quarter "Venezia Nuova" has preserved its architectonical
and urbanistic fascination with its network of narrow streets,
channels and bridges.
