THE
SURROUNDINGS OF PISA
The
first stop outside the walls of Pisa is the Massaciuccoli
Lake, the biggest marsh basin in central Italy, where you
find the village of Torre del Lago Puccini, which got
its name from the great musician Giacomo Puccini. |

You can still see Puccini's home
and the chapel where he is buried. Each year, in his honour,
the village celebrates a Puccini music festival with international
artists who play the most known operas of Puccini in a splendid
environment. A visit to the outskirts of Pisa could not avoid
one of the remains from an antique Early Christian settlement,
which features some architectural traces inspired by the antique
Roman architecture. The façade and the bell tower were
destroyed by the bombardments during the second world war and
you can only see the base, while there are some frescoes by
Deodato Orlando from the 14th century. The visit in the
surroundings of Pisa ends at the marvellous Tenuta di San
Rossore, in the regional Park Migliarino - San Rossore -
Massaciuccoli. It is a vast and suggestive green area which
first belonged to the Medici family, then to the Lorena family
and later to the Savoia, but is today a governmental estate
and is run by the municipality of Pisa.
