ATMOSPHERE
OF THE PAST
You
will surely feel the antique atmosphere of Siena if you stroll
along Via Bardini from the 13th century, which leads
you to the heart of the Medieval Cities, the Corte del Castellare
degli Ugurgieri, a fine example of Sienese architecture
of the 14th century, and the Porta Romana which still
recalls the past with its walls and the external niche decorated
with frescoes.

The
Loggia della Mercanzia was the commercial centre in the
15th century, built to be the shop-owners' court-house. Here
you take via di Cittΰ, , a charming street in the Medieval
centre, lined with high-class palaces such as the Palazzo
Patrizi from the 14th century, the Palazzo Chigi-Saracini
which houses the Accademia Chiagiana with its typical
façade decorated with windows with two lights, and the
Palazzo delle Papesse, today the art centre Centro
di Arte Contemporanea.
Along Via San Pietro you find Palazzo Buonsignori which
houses the Pinacoteca Nazionale, one of the most important
museums of Siena. The art works exposed provide a complete itinerary
of the Sienese art between the 12th and 17th century. It is
impossible to count all the masterpieces of the Pinacoteca,
so we just want to mention some of them such as the Madonna
dei Francescanti by Duccio di Buoninsegna, the
Madonna col Bambino by Simone Martini, the Annunciazione
by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, La Sacra Famiglia by Pinturicchio,
La Madonna e due santi by Neroccio, the Cristo
alle Colonne by Sodoma. This itinerary ends with
the visit of the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino, a beautiful
Gothic building which preserves a Crucifix by Perugino.
